Libya,
officially the Great Socialist People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya,
is a country in North Africa.
Bordering
the Mediterranean Sea to the north, Libya lies between Egypt
to the east, Sudan to the southeast, Chad and Niger to the
south, and Algeria and Tunisia to the west. With an area of
almost 1.8 million sq.km. (700'000sq.mi.), 90% of which is
desert, Libya is the fourth largest country in Africa by area,
and the 17th largest in the world.
The
capital, Tripoli, is home to 1.7 million of Libya's 5.8
million people. The three traditional parts of the country are
Tripolitania (west), Cyrenaica (east) and Fezzan (south).
The
name "Libya" is derived from the Egyptian term Libu,
which refers to one of the tribes Berber peoples living west
of the Nile. In Greek this became "Libya", although
in ancient Greece the term had a broader meaning, encompassing
all of North Africa west of Egypt, and sometimes referring to
the entire continent of Africa.

Name:
Jamahiriya
Libya
is a direct democracy without political parties, governed by
its populace through local councils.
Jamahiriya
(Arabic
جماهيرية) is
an Arabic term generally translated as "state of the
masses." The term is intended to be a generic term
describing a type of state, like "republic" or
"kingdom". It is often left untranslated in English,
with Libya's long-form name thus rendered as Great Socialist
People's Libyan Arab Jamahiriya.
The
word was derived from jumhuriya, which is the usual
Arabic translation of the English "republic". It was
coined by changing the component jumhur —
"public" — to its plural form jamāhir
— "the masses".

Libyan
Flag
The
flag of Libya (adopted on November 11, 1977) consists of a
simple green field with no other characteristics. It is the
only national flag in the world with just one color and no
design, insignia, or other details.
Symbolism:
Green is the traditional color of Islam, the state religion.
It is also symbolic of Muammar al-Qaddafi's "Green
Revolution".

Libyan
National Anthem
"Allahu
Akbar" (God is Great, in Arabic:
نشيد
وطني ليبي)
is the title of the national anthem of Libya.
It
was originally an Egyptian marching song which became popular
in Egypt and Syria during the Suez Canal War of 1956. It was
adopted on September 1, 1969, as the official anthem of Libya.

English
translation
God
is Great, God is Great
God is above any attacker's tricks,
And God is the best helper for the oppressed,
God is above any attacker's tricks,
And God is the best helper for the oppressed,
With certainty and with weapons I shall defend
My nation, truth's light shining in my hand;
Say it with me, say it with me:
God is greatest, God is greatest, God is greatest!
God is great over the attacker's tricks!
Oh
this world, watch and listen:
The enemy came coveting my position,
Oh this world, watch and listen:
The enemy came coveting my position,
I shall fight with weapons and defences
And if I die, I'll take him with me!
Say it with me, say it with me:
God is greatest, God is greatest, God is greatest!
God is above any attacker's tricks!
